Speeding Fine Calculator (Portugal)
Flashed by a radar in Portugal and wondering what it will cost? Enter your speed, the local limit, whether it happened inside or outside a locality and the vehicle type: the calculator applies the article 27.º table of the Código da Estrada and shows the fine, the offence classification, the licence points you lose and the driving ban you risk.
Use the speed the authority considered (for radar, after the technical margin) and the limit in force at the spot: the general one (50 km/h in localities, 90 on roads, 120 on motorways for a car) or the signposted one, if lower.
Serious offence (article 145.º of the Código da Estrada): besides the fine, you lose 2 licence points and risk a driving ban of 1 month to 1 year. Paying the minimum fine (€120) does not stop the ban: the case continues just to decide it (article 172.º, n.º 4). With no serious or very serious offences and no road crimes in the last 5 years, the ban's execution can be suspended (article 141.º).
The calculator applies the article 27.º, n.º 2 table of the Código da Estrada to general and signposted limits. Out of scope: the special limits the law sets for certain drivers and vehicles, coexistence zones, repeat offences and driving too fast for the conditions (article 24.º), which is a different offence. The exact fine within the range is set in the proceedings.

The article 27.º table: what each excess costs
The Código da Estrada sets four fine brackets, the same for everyone: €60 to €300, €120 to €600, €300 to €1,500 and €500 to €2,500. What changes is the excess speed that falls in each bracket, depending on the place and the vehicle. For a car or motorcycle, inside localities the steps sit at 20, 40 and 60 km/h of excess; outside localities (national roads, expressways and motorways) they rise to 30, 60 and 80 km/h. For other motor vehicles, such as heavy vehicles, the steps are tighter: 10, 20 and 40 km/h inside localities and 20, 40 and 60 km/h outside. The exact amount within each range is set in the proceedings, weighing gravity and record; whoever pays voluntarily pays the bracket minimum.
Minor, serious or very serious: points and the driving ban
The first bracket is a minor offence (contraordenação leve): you pay the fine and nothing else. From the second bracket the offence is serious (article 145.º) and from the third very serious (article 146.º), and the bill stops being only money: a serious offence subtracts 2 points from the driving licence and carries a driving ban of 1 month to 1 year; a very serious one subtracts 4 points and the ban runs from 2 months to 2 years (articles 147.º and 148.º). The licence starts with 12 points: at 5 or 4 points a road-safety training course is mandatory, at 3, 2 or 1 the theory exam must be retaken, and at 0 the licence is revoked. In the other direction, every 3-year period without serious or very serious offences gives back 3 points, up to a maximum of 15 (16 with voluntary training at renewal).
Paying the fine: the minimum, the deadlines and what does not go away
After the notice you have 15 working days to pay the fine voluntarily at the bracket minimum (article 172.º). For a minor offence, payment closes the case. For a serious or very serious one, paying the fine does not end it: the case continues just to decide the accessory driving ban. For a serious offence, the ban’s execution can be suspended if the driver has no road crimes and no serious or very serious offences on record in the last 5 years, possibly conditional on training or a bond of €500 to €5,000 (article 141.º). Instead of paying you can always file a defence within the deadline on the ticket. A note on radars: the speed that counts is not the one the radar reads but the “considered speed”, after the technical margin is deducted (up to 100 km/h, 5 to 7 km/h; above that, 5% to 7%, depending on the equipment, under Portaria n.º 352/2023).
Worked example
Say you were caught doing 90 km/h in a locality with a 50 km/h limit, in a car. The excess is 40 km/h: it falls in the second bracket inside localities (more than 20 and up to 40 km/h), a serious offence with a fine of €120 to €600, 2 licence points lost and a driving ban of 1 month to 1 year. Paying the minimum costs €120, but the case continues to decide the ban, which can be suspended if your record is clean for the last 5 years. If instead you were doing 120 km/h on a national road limited to 90, the 30 km/h excess outside localities would still be a minor offence: €60 to €300, no points, no ban. And at 95 km/h in that same 50 km/h locality (45 km/h over), the offence would already be very serious: €300 to €1,500, 4 points and a ban of 2 months to 2 years.
