IVA Calculator (Portuguese VAT)

Want to know how much VAT (IVA) is in a price, or what something costs without VAT? This calculator adds or removes Portuguese VAT from the amount you enter, at the rate you choose (standard, intermediate or reduced) and for your region. See the net amount, the VAT and the gross amount side by side.

Applied rate: 23%. Portugal has three rates (standard, intermediate and reduced) and each region has its own values (Mainland 23/13/6%, Madeira 22/12/5%, Azores 16/9/4%). 2026 values.

Amount including VAT

How the amount is reached

Amount excluding VAT€100.00
VAT (23%)€23.00

Educational estimate, not tax advice. It applies the VAT rate you choose (standard, intermediate or reduced) to the amount entered; it does not decide which rate a good or service is subject to (Lists I and II of the CIVA). Confirm the rate that applies to your case.

What VAT is

VAT (IVA, Imposto sobre o Valor Acrescentado) is a consumption tax added to the price of most goods and services. The seller charges VAT to the customer and hands it over to the State. The amount you pay therefore splits in two: the net amount (what the seller keeps) and the VAT itself.

Adding or removing VAT

There are two opposite calculations. To add VAT, start from the net amount and multiply by the rate: VAT = amount × rate; the gross amount is the sum of the two. To remove VAT, start from the gross amount and divide by (1 + rate): net = gross ÷ 1.23 (at the 23% rate), with the VAT being the difference. A common mistake is to "take 23% off" the final price: that gives the wrong figure, because the 23% was applied to the lower, net amount.

The rates in Portugal

There are three VAT rates: standard, intermediate and reduced. On the Mainland they are 23%, 13% and 6% respectively. The autonomous regions have lower rates: Madeira applies 22%, 12% and 5%, and the Azores 16%, 9% and 4%. Which rate applies depends on the good or service: most are at the standard rate; essential foods, books and medicines usually carry lower rates. This calculator applies whichever rate you choose.

Worked example

A €100 service excluding VAT, on the Mainland, at the 23% standard rate: the VAT is 100 × 23% = €23, and the gross amount is €123. The other way round, if a receipt shows €123 including VAT at the same rate, the net amount is 123 ÷ 1.23 = €100 and the VAT is, again, €23. Note that €23 is about 18.7% of the final price, not 23% of it.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the VAT on an amount?
To add VAT, multiply the net amount by the rate (for example × 23% on the Mainland) and add it to the amount; to remove VAT, divide the gross amount by 1.23 (at the 23% rate) to get the net amount, with the VAT being the difference between the two.
What are the VAT rates in Portugal in 2026?
On the Mainland, the standard rate is 23%, the intermediate rate 13% and the reduced rate 6%. Madeira uses 22%, 12% and 5%, and the Azores 16%, 9% and 4%. The applicable rate depends on the type of good or service.
How do you remove VAT from a gross amount?
Divide the gross amount by (1 + rate). At 23%, divide by 1.23; at 13%, by 1.13; at 6%, by 1.06. The result is the net amount; the VAT is the difference. Simply subtracting 23% from the final amount gives the wrong answer.
Is VAT different in Madeira and the Azores?
Yes. The autonomous regions apply lower rates than the Mainland: Madeira uses 22% / 12% / 5% and the Azores 16% / 9% / 4%, against the Mainland’s 23% / 13% / 6%. Pick your region in the calculator.
Does this calculator decide which rate my product is subject to?
No. The calculator applies the rate you choose (standard, intermediate or reduced). The rate each good or service is subject to is set by Lists I and II of the VAT Code. If in doubt, confirm the classification for your case.
