Minimum Wage Calculator (Portugal 2026)
How much is the Portuguese minimum wage, and how much of it reaches your account? The law sets the guaranteed minimum monthly pay every year, with higher figures in Madeira and the Azores, and requires it to be reduced in proportion for part-time work. Pick the region and the hours to see the gross and net amounts, the hourly value and the yearly total.
For part-time work the minimum wage is proportional to the hours (article 154(3) of the Labour Code). Full time is 40 hours a week, but some sectors set less in their collective agreement: adjust the second field, because the proportion is calculated against it.
There are only two cases where the law allows paying below the minimum (article 275): certified training, with a 20% reduction, and reduced working capacity, where the reduction is the gap to full capacity, only above 10% and never beyond 50%.
On a full-time schedule, the minimum wage in force on the mainland in 2026 is €920.00 a month. That is a gross figure: what reaches your account is on the net line.
How the figure is reached
| Full-time minimum wage on the mainland | €920.00 |
| Gross guaranteed minimum monthly pay | €920.00 |
| Employee Social Security (11%) | − €101.20 |
| IRS withholding | €0.00 |
| Net per month | €818.80 |
| Value per hour (article 271) | €5.31 |
| Value of a 8-hour day | €42.46 |
| Gross per year (14 months, with bonuses) | €12,880.00 |
| Net per year | €11,463.20 |
There is no IRS withholding: in 2026 this region's withholding exemption limit is €920.00, exactly the minimum wage. You still file the IRS return, and that is where the final tax is settled.
The minimum wage prevails over any lower amount set in an employment contract or a collective agreement, and paying less is a very serious administrative offence.
The meal allowance and the holiday and Christmas bonuses do not count towards the minimum (article 274(4)): base pay must reach the legal figure on its own, and those amounts are added on top.
Educational estimate: it does not decide which lines on your payslip count towards the minimum, nor compute the IRS on anything added to the salary (overtime, allowances above the exempt limits), the annual IRS settlement, the employer's cost, or a higher minimum set by your collective agreement.

How much the minimum wage is in 2026
On the mainland it is €920 a month, set by Decree-Law 139/2025 with effect from 1 January 2026. In the Autonomous Region of Madeira it is €980, approved by Regional Legislative Decree 1/2026/M, which is 6.52% above the mainland figure. In the Autonomous Region of the Azores it is €966, because a regional law in force since 2002 always adds 5% to the national value. This minimum prevails over any lower amount agreed in an employment contract or set in a collective agreement: paying less is a very serious administrative offence.
Part-time work gets a proportional minimum
Article 154(3) of the Labour Code entitles a part-time worker to base pay in proportion to their normal weekly working hours. On a 20-hour week, half of the 40-hour full-time week, the guaranteed minimum is half: €460 on the mainland. Note what that means, and it is the part almost nobody checks: the hourly value is exactly the same as for a full-time worker. If your sector has a full-time week shorter than 40 hours, adjust that field, because the proportion is calculated against it.
The only two reductions the law allows
Article 275 allows going below the minimum in two cases only. The first is a trainee, apprentice, intern or person in certified training, with a 20% reduction that cannot last more than a year, and drops to six months where the worker already holds a relevant vocational qualification. The second is a worker with reduced working capacity, where the reduction equals the difference between full capacity and the effective-capacity coefficient for the contracted activity, applies only when that difference exceeds 10%, and never goes beyond 50%. Outside these two cases no lawful discount exists.
What reaches your account: 11% and no income tax
The gross figure loses the employee Social Security contribution of 11%, and nothing else. In 2026 nobody earning the minimum wage has IRS withheld anywhere in the country, because the withholding tables set the exemption limit at exactly each territory’s minimum wage: €920 on the mainland, €980 in Madeira and €966 in the Azores. On the mainland, €920 gross means €101.20 of Social Security and €818.80 net. Having no withholding is not the same as having no tax return: the IRS return is still filed, and that is where the final tax is settled.
The value of an hour, a day and a year
The hourly value follows the formula in article 271: monthly pay times 12, divided by 52 weeks times the weekly hours. On the mainland, on a 40-hour week, that is €5.31 an hour and about €42.46 for an eight-hour day. Over a year you receive 14 months, because the holiday and Christmas bonuses each equal one month of pay on top of the 12: €12,880 gross and €11,463.20 net on the mainland. The bonuses also pay the 11% Social Security contribution.
What counts, and what does not, towards the minimum
The minimum is measured against pay, not against everything printed on the payslip. Article 274 includes in the minimum pay figure benefits in kind such as food or accommodation, within their own ceilings, sales commission, production bonuses and gratuities that qualify as pay. It expressly excludes any allowance, bonus or gratuity granted occasionally or for a period longer than a month, which leaves out the meal allowance and the holiday and Christmas bonuses. So a payslip showing €850 of base pay plus a meal allowance does not meet the minimum wage, even if the total exceeds €920.
Worked example
A full-time worker on the mainland, 40 hours a week, receives €920 gross a month in 2026. They pay 11% to Social Security, €101.20, and no income tax, because the withholding exemption limit is precisely €920: that leaves €818.80 net. The hour is worth €5.31, and the year, with the holiday and Christmas bonuses, €12,880 gross and €11,463.20 net. The same worker on a 20-hour contract is entitled to €460 gross and €409.40 net, yet the hour is still worth the same €5.31. In Madeira the minimum rises to €980 (€872.20 net, €5.65 an hour) and in the Azores to €966 (€859.74 net, €5.57 an hour). On a certified-training internship, the 20% reduction in article 275 takes the €920 down to €736 gross and €655.04 net, for at most one year.
