ETFs

See what investing in the main index ETFs would have returned. Lump sum, monthly investing and comparison, with dividends reinvested.

UCITS ETFs (European)

Domiciled in Ireland and listed in Europe in euros. These are generally the ETFs a retail investor in Portugal can actually buy through a European broker.

US-domiciled ETFs

Listed in the United States in dollars. Because they do not publish the key information document required by the PRIIPs regulation, they are generally not available to retail investors in the European Union, so we show them as a historical reference.

How to read these numbers

An ETF is an exchange-traded fund that tracks an index, so a single ETF gives exposure to hundreds or thousands of companies at once. The figures here are total return, with dividends reinvested.

In accumulating ETFs such as VWCE, IWDA or CSPX, that reinvestment happens automatically inside the fund itself. In distributing ETFs the dividend is paid out to the investor, who would have to reinvest it to reach this result.

The annualised return lets you compare periods of different lengths, and the largest drop shows how much the fund fell from its previous peak. ETFs listed in the United States are shown in dollars, so a euro return also depends on the exchange rate.

All figures are historical and are not forecasts: past performance does not guarantee future performance.

What about tax on the return?

The simulated return is gross. In Portugal, realised gains pay income tax (IRS). These guides and calculators explain how much and how to report:
