Gives the age and date; it uses the official 2026 value (66 years 9 months) as the reference, which tends to rise over time. It does not compute the pension amount or the exact early-retirement cut and does not detect the very long careers regime.

Educational estimate, not advice. The normal pension age of 66 years 9 months, the 4-month reduction per year of career beyond 40 and early access at 60 with 40 years of career are official for 2026. Always confirm with Social Security.

The normal pension age in 2026

The normal age for the old-age pension is set every year by portaria, from the evolution of life expectancy at 65. For 2026 it is 66 years and 9 months (Portaria n.º 358/2024/1). The calculator adds that age to your date of birth to show the month you reach it.

The normal age rises over time

Because it tracks life expectancy, the normal pension age tends to rise by a few months over the years. The calculator uses the official 2026 value as the reference, so if your retirement is still many years away, your real age may be a little higher. It is an educational estimate, not a guarantee.

Long careers lower your personal age

For every year of contributory career beyond 40, the normal age is reduced by 4 months: this is your personal retirement age. With 42 years of career, for example, the personal age drops from 66 years 9 months to 66 years 1 month. This personal age is the reference for the early-retirement reduction.

Retiring early from 60 (flexibility)

With at least 40 years of contributory career you can access the pension from age 60 under the flexibility regime. The sustainability factor does not apply, but a reduction of 0.5% applies for each month of anticipation relative to your personal retirement age. This calculator gives the age and date; the pension amount and the exact cut are a separate calculation.

Worked example

Say you were born in March 1965 and have 42 years of contributory career. You reach the normal pension age (66 years and 9 months) in December 2031. With 42 years of career (2 above 40), your personal retirement age drops 8 months, to 66 years and 1 month. And because you have more than 40 years of contributions, you can take the pension early from age 60 (i.e. from March 2025) with a reduction of 0.5% for each month of anticipation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the retirement age in Portugal in 2026?
The normal pension age in 2026 is 66 years and 9 months, set by Portaria n.º 358/2024/1 from life expectancy at 65. It is a two-month increase on the 66 years and 7 months of 2025.
Will the retirement age keep rising?
Yes, it tends to rise. The normal pension age is recalculated each year from life expectancy at 65, so it usually increases by a few months a year. The calculator uses the official 2026 value as the reference; people still far from retirement may face a slightly higher real age.
Can I retire before the normal age?
Usually you can from age 60 if you have at least 40 years of contributory career (the flexibility regime). The sustainability factor does not apply, but a reduction of 0.5% applies for each month of anticipation relative to your personal retirement age.
What is the personal retirement age?
It is the normal age reduced by 4 months for each year of contributory career beyond 40. With 44 years of career, for example, it drops by 16 months. It is the reference age used to calculate the penalty when you retire early.
Is there early retirement with no penalty?
Yes, under the very long careers regime: from age 60 with 48 years of contributions, or with 46 years having started contributing by age 16/17. As this calculator does not ask the age you started contributing, it does not detect that regime automatically. Confirm with Social Security.
Are the figures exact?
The normal age of 66 years 9 months and the flexibility rules are official for 2026. The result is an educational estimate: it uses the 2026 value as the reference (your real age may rise), does not compute the pension amount or the exact early-retirement cut, and does not detect the very long careers regime. Always confirm with Social Security.
