About Shopify (SHOP)

Shopify is a Canadian company that provides, on subscription, the technology any business uses to build and run an online store: the website, catalogue, cart, payments, shipping and inventory. It charges a monthly fee plus a commission on the sales it processes, so revenue grows with its customers' e-commerce volume.

It is often described as the alternative to selling on a marketplace such as Amazon, because the merchant keeps ownership of the store and of the customer relationship. The shares trade on the Nasdaq under the ticker SHOP. The history is one of very strong but extremely volatile growth: the stock rose many times over from 2016 and, along the way, lost more than two thirds of its value in the 2022 growth-stock correction. It pays no dividend.
