About Merck (MRK)

Merck & Co. is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. Its most important medicine is Keytruda, a cancer immunotherapy that is now one of the best-selling drugs on the planet and accounts for a huge share of revenue. It also has a strong vaccines business (such as Gardasil) and an animal-health division.

It trades on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker MRK and is part of the S&P 500 and Dow Jones indices. It is a defensive, dividend-paying stock. An important distinction: in the United States and Canada it is called Merck & Co., but in the rest of the world it operates as MSD, because there the "Merck" name belongs to the German pharmaceutical company Merck KGaA, a different business.
