Dependency Supplement Calculator

The dependency supplement (complemento por dependência) is the monthly benefit paid to pensioners who need another person’s help with the basic acts of daily life. In 2026 it is worth €131.20 (1st degree) or €236.16 (2nd degree) on general-regime pensions, and €118.08 or €223.04 on the social pension and equivalent ones, paid double in July and in December. This calculator shows the amount for your case and applies the rule that stops the 1st degree when pensions exceed €600.

Choose the pension you receive and the degree of dependency certified by Social Security. The sum of pensions only matters for the 1st degree: pensions of the same nature are added together (own-right pensions with each other; survivor, widowhood and orphan pensions with each other).

What the dependency supplement is

It is a monthly cash benefit, set out in Decree-Law 265/99, for pensioners in a situation of dependency: people who cannot, on their own, take care of personal hygiene, feed themselves or move around, and who need another person’s assistance. It adds to the pension and is paid together with it. It is not automatic: it must be requested from Social Security, and the dependency situation must be certified.

Who is entitled

Pensioners receiving invalidity, old-age or survivor pensions of the general regime, of the special agricultural regime, and of the non-contributory or equivalent regime (social invalidity or old-age pension, orphan and widowhood pensions, transitional rural regime). It can also be granted to non-pensioners whose ability to move is impaired by the illnesses of Law 90/2009: familial amyloidosis, Machado-Joseph disease, HIV, multiple sclerosis, cancer, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

The two degrees of dependency

The 1st degree covers those without autonomy for the basic needs of daily life: they cannot manage personal hygiene, feed themselves or move around alone. The 2nd degree covers those who, on top of that dependency, are bedridden or have severe dementia. The degree is not self-declared: it is certified by Social Security’s Incapacity Verification System based on medical information, and can be reviewed if the situation worsens.

How much you receive in 2026

The amounts are percentages of the social pension, worth €262.40 in 2026. On general-regime pensions, the supplement is 50% for the 1st degree (€131.20) and 90% for the 2nd degree (€236.16). On agricultural-regime and non-contributory or equivalent pensions, it is 45% (€118.08) and 85% (€223.04). These are the official amounts of Portaria 480-B/2025/1, updated every year together with the social pension.

The €600 rule on the 1st degree

The 1st-degree supplement is only granted while the pensioner does not receive more than €600 of pensions per month. For this count, pensions of the same nature are added together: own-right pensions (invalidity, old age, retirement) sum with each other, and derived-right pensions (survivor, widowhood, orphan) sum with each other. If the sum exceeds €600, the 1st degree is not granted and, if already being paid, it ends. The 2nd degree has no pension limit at all.

Paid double in July and in December

The supplement is paid every month, together with the pension, and double in July and in December. In practice that is 14 payments a year: someone receiving €236.16 a month gets €472.32 in each of those two months and €3,306.24 over the year. It is paid to the pensioner or to the person or institution the pension is being paid to.

What it can be combined with

The supplement is paid on top of the qualifying pensions, and the 1st-degree supplement can be combined with the solidarity supplement for the elderly (CSI). It cannot be combined with work income or training courses: carrying out any professional activity, paid or not, ends the entitlement. It also cannot be combined with another benefit serving the same purpose. In care homes with state-funded support there is a restriction: the pensioner can only receive the 1st-degree supplement, not the 2nd.

How to apply

The request is filed with Social Security using the form of the respective regime (CNP-05 in the contributory regime, RP5027 in the non-contributory one) plus the medical information for the incapacity assessment (form SVI 7-DGSS, available at Social Security desks and health centres). There is no deadline; entitlement starts in the month after filing and the answer takes, on average, 150 days. You must tell Social Security if you start working or stop receiving the assistance stated in the request.

Worked example

Imagine a general-regime pensioner on a €550 monthly pension, bedridden, with certified 2nd-degree dependency: they receive €236.16 per month (90% of the €262.40 social pension), €472.32 in July and in December, and €3,306.24 over the year. With 1st-degree dependency they would receive €131.20; but on a €650 pension the 1st degree would no longer be granted, because it exceeds the €600 limit. The 2nd degree has no such limit: on the same €650 pension, the €236.16 would be paid in full.

Frequently asked questions

A monthly cash benefit, set out in Decree-Law 265/99, paid to pensioners who need another person’s help with the basic acts of daily life, such as personal hygiene, feeding or moving around. It adds to the pension, is paid together with it and must be requested from Social Security.

On general-regime pensions: €131.20 per month for the 1st degree and €236.16 for the 2nd degree. On the social pension, the agricultural regime and equivalent ones: €118.08 and €223.04. Who qualifies for the dependency supplement?
Pensioners on invalidity, old-age or survivor pensions (general and agricultural regimes) and on non-contributory or equivalent pensions (social pension, orphan, widowhood, transitional rural) in a dependency situation certified by Social Security. It can also be granted to non-pensioners whose mobility is impaired by the illnesses of Law 90/2009, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis or cancer.
What is the difference between the 1st and the 2nd degree?
In the 1st degree, the person cannot, alone, manage personal hygiene, feed themselves or move around. In the 2nd degree, on top of that dependency, the person is bedridden or has severe dementia. The degree is certified by Social Security’s Incapacity Verification System and can be reviewed if the situation worsens.
What is the €600 rule?
The 1st-degree supplement is only granted while the sum of the monthly pensions of the same nature does not exceed €600. Own-right pensions sum with each other and derived-right pensions sum with each other. Above €600, the 1st degree is not granted or ends. The 2nd degree has no pension limit.
Is the dependency supplement paid double?
Yes. On top of the 12 months, the supplement is paid double in July and in December, for a total of 14 payments a year. Someone on €131.20 a month collects €1,836.80 over the year; someone on €236.16 collects €3,306.24.
Can I combine the supplement with the CSI or with work?
The 1st-degree supplement can be combined with the solidarity supplement for the elderly (CSI). Not with work: carrying out any professional activity, paid or not, and training courses end the entitlement. It also cannot be combined with another benefit serving the same purpose.
How do I apply for the dependency supplement?
With Social Security, using the form of the respective regime (CNP-05 in the contributory regime, RP5027 in the non-contributory one) plus the SVI 7-DGSS medical form for the incapacity assessment. There is no deadline: you can apply at any time, entitlement starts in the month after filing and the answer takes, on average, 150 days.
