About Goldman Sachs (GS)

Goldman Sachs is one of the best-known investment banks in the world. It makes money advising companies on mergers and acquisitions and on stock-market listings, trading shares, bonds and other assets for its own account and for clients, and managing wealth and funds. Unlike a commercial bank, it relies little on deposits and heavily on fees and market trading.

It trades on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker GS and is part of the S&P 500 and Dow Jones indices. It is a dividend stock. Because much of its results depend on capital-markets activity, profit swings widely from year to year: it surges when there is plenty of dealmaking and trading and falls when markets cool.
