Escudo to Euro Converter

Convert escudos to euros (and euros to escudos) at the fixed, official rate: 1 euro = 200.482 escudos. This rate was set by law in 1998 and never changes, so it does not depend on the day’s exchange rate. Enter an amount in escudos, contos or euros and see the equivalent. For example, 1,000 escudos (one conto) is €4.99.

The rate is fixed and irrevocable: 1 euro = 200.482 escudos. For example, 1,000 escudos (one conto) is €4.99.

How the result is worked out

Fixed conversion rate1 € = 200.482 esc.
Amount in escudos1,000 esc.
Amount in euros€4.99

Educational estimate, not financial advice. The rate is fixed (€1 = 200.482 escudos); since 1 March 2022 escudos can no longer be exchanged for euros at Banco de Portugal.

The conversion rate is fixed: €1 = 200.482 escudos

Unlike foreign currencies, the escudo has no fluctuating exchange rate. When Portugal adopted the euro, the Council of the European Union irrevocably fixed the rate at 200.482 escudos per euro (on 31 December 1998, in force from 1 January 1999). That, and only that, is the rate to convert any amount between the two currencies, now and forever.

From escudos to euros

To go from escudos to euros, divide the amount in escudos by 200.482. So 1,000 escudos is 1,000 ÷ 200.482 = €4.99; 100,000 escudos is €498.80. The result is rounded to the cent, as the euro conversion rules require.

From euros to escudos

The other way round, multiply the amount in euros by 200.482. €1 is 200 escudos (more precisely 200.482, rounded to the whole escudo); €100 is 20,048 escudos. It is handy for seeing the “in escudos” value of a current price and comparing it with old prices people remember.

What is a conto

A conto is the popular name for a thousand escudos. Many people in Portugal still think and talk in contos: “five contos” is 5,000 escudos, that is €24.94. The “Contos to euros” mode does that sum directly: choose it if the amount you have in mind is in contos rather than escudos.

Worked example

Say you find an old price tag: a book at 1,500 escudos. In the “Escudos to euros” mode, with 1,500, the calculator shows €7.48 (1,500 ÷ 200.482). A coffee that cost 50 escudos would be €0.25 today. And a house advertised in 1998 at 10,000 contos (ten thousand contos = ten million escudos) is €49,879.79, a good way to see how old amounts translate into today’s euros.

Frequently asked questions

What is the escudo to euro conversion rate?
The rate is fixed and irrevocable: 1 euro = 200.482 escudos. It was set by the Council of the European Union on 31 December 1998 and came into force on 1 January 1999. It is not an exchange rate that moves; it is always the same.
How much is 1,000 escudos in euros?
1,000 escudos is 1,000 ÷ 200.482 = €4.99. A thousand escudos is what is called “one conto”, so a conto is worth almost 5 euros.
How much is one conto in euros?
One conto is a thousand escudos, that is €4.99. Five contos (5,000 escudos) is €24.94 and a hundred contos (100,000 escudos) is €498.80.
Can I still exchange escudos for euros at the bank?
No longer. Banco de Portugal exchanged escudo banknotes for euros until 28 February 2022 (coins only until 31 December 2002). After that date, escudo notes and coins can no longer be exchanged and have only collector value. The calculator still shows what they were worth in euros.
How do you convert from escudos to euros?
Divide the amount in escudos by 200.482 to get euros, and multiply by 200.482 to go the other way. The calculator does both sums for you, and also converts contos (thousands of escudos) straight to euros.
